Cane Seating

Cane Seating

What is a Cane Seat?

Hand woven Cane work forms a variety of styles and is threaded onto seats, backs and arm panels. The traditional pattern is created over 6 stages and is finished with a beaded edging or neatly pegged off. Cane seating is more delicate and requires a certain degree of care once restored.

Examples of Cane Work

Bedroom Chairs

These are typical occasional light weight chairs with a square or round seat.

Double Panelled

This is often seen on arm panels and some back panels. It is when there is a cane weave on either side of the frame and is therefore double-skinned.

Blind Woven Work

This is where the cane is hand threaded through blind holes around the frame but doesn't return and therefore the holes cannot be seen from the other side.

Medallion

This design has a wooden pendant or 'medallion' suspended centrally in the back panel.

Sunray / Sunburst

This design is where the back panel have cane strands radiating from the top or the bottom.

Pre-woven Cane Seats

These type of chairs have a groove and a strip of centre cane around the edge of the seat, holding it in place.

“Rachel  was very helpful and flexible . My chair was delivered to her before lockdown and we kept in touch. She posted it to me some time later when I needed it. Excellent job.”
